August 21st, 2009 by admin

When you are new to developing websites it is no wonder you may be unaware of many aspects and thus can make different mistakes. But you always have a chance to avoid the most common of them or correct if you have already made one. Here is the list of the most frequent web design errors for you to learn.

1. White spaces
White space is a very important element of your web page design and implies the empty space used within your website to separate content parts. White spaces are so significant because they are responsible for the way the visitor will perceive your website in general, for the impression they will get from viewing your content. You should make sufficient spaces between your website different parts in order for the viewer to read your content easily and for your web pages not to look too crowdy.

2. Busy pages
Filling your website pages with content be careful not to go too far with its amount on a single page. Every section should be dedicated to some specific piece of information for the visitors not to get confused. Don’t mix all you want to add to your website within one page - if the topic changes let it be posted separately on the other page. It is better for you to have several short web pages which will contain only relevant and useful information than provide one endless page with tons of incomprehensible written content a lot pf users may even refuse to scroll.

3. Hard to find links
If you have already familiarized with search engine optimization main issues you should know that links are considered to be a very important part of any web presence as they much predetermine your site popularity. That is why your task is to place your links in the way every visitor will easily see them which touches upon two aspects. First you need to highlight your links with other color or underline each link for them to distinguish on the background of other written content. And second aspect to mind implies not making ordinary text look like a link, which means that you shouldn’t apply the same methods you use for highlighting the links to style your web page ordinary text.

4. Hard to find content updates
Every visitor that returns to your page want to see whether you have prepared something fresh and new which may captivate his interest and become useful. That is why you should make your new information well seen within your website in order for every visitor to notice it at once. Besides, it will add to your web pages good design as well.
You can achieve this in several ways - creating a separate section for the new content you add to your website, creating a link which will lead to the page with updated news or something like that. Anything you like just to make it easy for your returning visitors to stay informed.

5. Improper image formats
When you insert images within your website make sure they are of correct format as this tends to be a vital aspect. The wrong image format may damage its size or quality and thus spoil your website look. There are three image formats considered to be appropriate for online graphics - GIF, JPEG and PNG, each of them having peculiar features.
GIF format is capable of 256 colors only and thus won’t fit photographs or other most gradient pictures. It will be good for images with limited palette and small file size.
JPEG format is excellent for images with a lot of different colors, photographs as it maintain 24 bit color. JPEG images are known by their lossy compression which means that the smaller you make the image the more quality it losses so you better use lower compression if possible.
PNG format is distinguished by alpha transparency and is appropriate for photos and other graphic images. PNG images are capable of 8 or 24 bit color bit and unlike JPEG images maintain lossless compression.

6. Default page title
Changing the default page title will take you few seconds but will improve your website presentation significantly. You must make sure that your every web page has a unique title and that peculiar page title appears before the title of the website. It will influence your site search engine optimization process helping to achieve higher rankings within search results and make them look relevant to your future visitors.

7. Confusing navigation
The basic website element that plays an important role in your web pages design is the navigation. In order for the visitors to use your website easily and in the most efficient way you need to provide clear navigation so that they may browse your web pages without being confused. So while you are designing your website mind that those who will visit it should find any piece of content they are interested in with minimum efforts.

8. Ads within content
In the process of your online presence creation make sure that the advertising is separated from the main content which can be easily done with the help of banners. They can be placed apart from other content and won’t confuse the visitor, so he may click them if he want to or ignore but he will definitely see them. You should also make sure that the advertising links are separated from the ordinary links within your content.

Of course, there is a lot of other small aspects, such as fonts type and size, colors, backgrounds and etc, but they often depend on the style of the designer and the preferences of a potential visitor, though some certain rules still exist. The points mentioned above imply the most common and general design mistakes every designer could but shouldn’t make in order not to spoil the reputation of the website he creates.
